Work behind the scenes

By ServMe Nakamura

As some of you may realize, I’m not only a sim owner but also working in various other sectors of Second Life. One of those sectors is advertising : I currently work as Senior Liaison for SL Marketing (should you require their services, feel free to contact me) and I run a small scale adboard operation that delivers ads in world. If you’re thinking “adcutter!” or flashing obnoxious tower ads, you’re wrong though.

Since the day that I started running my own operation, I’ve met several residents that were very defensive and weary of my intentions, yet when I was done talking to them and explaining my business and view on things, most were rather impressed and supportive. I try setting a higher standard for in world advertising to show shoppers and advertisers that there are options besides the 16sqm extortionists.

Anyway, to make a long story short : the network expanded, I added new sims, new boards, new servers and at one point in time I got lost and didn’t keep up the back end administration. The network was (and still is) in dire need of a total overhaul, phasing out the old v1.4  boards and replacing them with v1.5, reorganizing and moving as well expanding the number of servers used to power the network. All of this requires quite some work and little to none is visible to the casual resident that passes by.

As I’m heading off to bed, 6 out of 19 sims have already been updated and upgraded and connected to the new servers. I hope to finish at least 2 or three more locations today and by Monday December 10th all boards should be operational again. Current customers have been notified that their ads may be unavailable for short or longer periods of time, but also that as long as the network is not completely finished and delivering what they paid for, I’m extending their rental period.

Once I’m done with this task – the network currently consists of over 130 boards – I’ll be set to more easily configure and set up networks that fit the customers needs better. 2 new customer have already expressed interest in my solutions and are a waiting for the final specs of the network and boards available.
